The Fort Worth experience: Making a Movement

The 2022 SCN Fall Summit, organized by HSC Next and other community partners, will focus on Making a Movement. Over the course of 2.5 days, the Summit Host team will showcase some of Fort Worth's strengths, highlighting how these strengths can translate to a nationwide movement to combat the recent economic struggles in our country.

HSC Next has been at the heart of the movement to develop the entrepreneurial ecosystem into a powerhouse in the state of Texas. The city boasts an impressive string of biotech exits and a new Techstars accelerator focused on physical therapy, the first of its kind in the world. Summit content will focus on actionable steps to start small movements for increased entrepreneurial activity in communities around the country that will kickstart an entrepreneurial renaissance in the US.

The majority of the Summit will take place in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, the birthplace of entrepreneurial activity in the city. The Stockyards features world-class amenities, delicious barbeque, and Tex Mex; the world's only daily longhorn cattle drive, and the world's largest honkytonk. Don't let all of this "cowboy culture" fool you. In Fort Worth, Y'all means ALL. Fort Worth's "cowboys" are as diverse as the city itself. The city is home to the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame, the Cowboys of Color Rodeo, the Juneteenth Museum - where Juneteenth was first established as a holiday, and Mariachi bands galore. The Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce plays a huge role in the ecosystem as Spanish-speaking people make up more than 36% of the city's population. Fort Worth was recently ranked as the 14th largest city in the country for Hispanic entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship rates in the Asian American community are higher than the national average.

We are so excited to explore "Funkytown." Don't delay getting tickets, we are capping ticket sales at 130!

About Fort Worth

Fort Worth is the 13th largest in the US and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The city is known as one of the best places to live in Texas thanks to its strong job market, diverse culture, and southern hospitality. Mayor Mattie Parker is the youngest mayor of a major US city and Fort Worth is consistently well ranked among Texas cities for being a great place to live. Despite these assets, the city has an underdeveloped entrepreneurial ecosystem. Because of this, strong emphasis has been placed on increasing the connectedness of the startup scene with multiple efforts in process including hosting the largest Global Entrepreneurship Week in the country the last two years in a row.

Immigrant Entrepreneurship in the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Community

Marco JohnsonGoran KrndijaJenny PoonMunatsi Manyande

According to the Kauffman Foundation, immigrants are twice as likely to start companies as U.S. born citizens. Their stories are as unique as the businesses they found. This session will highlight three of those paths: a refugee from a war-torn region turned entrepreneur, an asylum seeker who now serves other immigrant entrepreneurs, and an entrepreneur and ecosystem builder who grew up watching her parents navigate small business ownership as refugees.

Ecosystems Approach to Movement Building (ICU)

Paulo GregoryAlfredo MatthewCatherine Read

Every SCN Summit has a workshop hosted by SCN's InterCultural Unity committee where we explore Diversity, Equity, and Belonging within the context of ecosystem building. Most entrepreneurs and small business owners lack access to the resources and supports necessary to start, stabilize and grow their enterprises, particularly in systemically marginalized communities. There are new models being developed and deployed to aim resources directly at the ground that utilize both policy and practice to connect and mobilize people and capital to build the power to bring economic development to communities that have been struggling to survive for generations.

This session will explore strategies to mobilize significant resources and collective human capital to create sustainable change. The session will also engage participants in applying these concrete tools and strategies in your own communities.
